Trademark Protection in Africa: ARIPO and OAPI Systems

Africa is the continent of the future, and Saudi Arabia has growing investments in the Horn of Africa and East Africa. To avoid registering in 54 separate countries, there are two regional organizations: ARIPO for anglophone, OAPI for francophone.
The Two Regional Systems
ARIPO (African Regional Intellectual Property Organization): 22 anglophone African countries, headquartered in Harare (Zimbabwe). Includes Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia, Ghana.
OAPI (African Intellectual Property Organization): 17 francophone African countries, headquartered in Yaoundé (Cameroon). Includes Senegal, Côte d'Ivoire, Cameroon, Morocco, Tunisia.
Some major African countries are in neither (Nigeria, South Africa, Egypt) — requiring separate national registration.
Advantages of Regional Filing
One application covering multiple countries.
One language (English for ARIPO, French for OAPI).
Unified fees with discount versus separate filing.
Unified legal administration.
Limitations
Some major countries outside both systems: Nigeria, South Africa, Egypt.
Judicial enforcement differs country-by-country, even within the same system.
Registration grants legal protection, but actual enforcement is weak in some African countries.
Approximate Fees
ARIPO: ~$500 for the application + $100 per country. Total for 10 countries: ~$1,500 + agent fees.
OAPI: ~$600 for the full application (automatically covering all countries).
For the Saudi Investor
Africa is a long-term opportunity. Early registration is cheap investment in a massive emerging market.
Priority for countries where Saudi Arabia actively invests: Egypt (national), Morocco (OAPI), Kenya (ARIPO), Nigeria (national).
